The Honorable Robert S. Strauss, public servant, statesman, and attorney, has played a central role in developments that have reshaped the political landscape of the United States and the world. He has served his nation in prominent positions under Republican and Democratic administrations. Under President George Bush, he was U.S. ambassador to the Soviet Union as that nation began its historic transformation, and he continued his service as U.S. ambassador to the Russian Federation. As U.S. special trade representative under President Jimmy Carter, he led multilateral negotiations that resulted in landmark legislation. His achievements as President Carter's representative to the Middle East Peace negotiations earned him the Presidential Medal of Freedom. As an attorney, visiting lecturer at universities, and prolific author, this native Texan has broken ground and opened doors to new perspectives in law, public policy, foreign relations, and global commerce. For his distinguished achievements transcending the boundaries of political parties and nations, and influencing human progress on a global scale, Southern Methodist University is honored to confer upon Robert S. Strauss the degree of Doctor of Laws, honoris causa.
